Worry

Worry is a part of our everyday lives. We may feel worried when we’re waiting for our exam results, or maybe because a sudden work deadline has come up. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus reminds us to focus on Him & His promises when we feel worried.

What is worry?

Worry is a natural response to a situation where we feel under pressure. The situations we find ourselves in are all different. But regardless of what life stage or environment we’re in, worry can surface at anytime.

However, there are different types of worry. There’s the worry that is directed at good things, which is manageable and which convicts us to do our responsibilities as Christians. For example, we may worry about the Lord’s work (1 Cor 7:32), of the wellbeing of someone (Phil 2:20).

On the other hand, there is worry that is directed at wrong things, which is unmanageable or leads us to a lack in trust in God. For example, when worry drives us to overwork on less important things (Luke 10:41).

When the second type of worry occurs, Jesus reminds us to focus on our Father in Heaven & His promises.

Focus on our Father in Heaven

When worry strikes, we should remember our Father in Heaven. This is because He is a God who:

  • Provides for us (Matt 6:26-30) - The birds of the air don’t store up food, yet our God who created them also provides for their daily needs. If we are more valuable than birds, wouldn’t God also provide for us?

  • Cares for us (Matt 6:32) - We have a God who knows our life and our needs. And not only that, He has the resources and the abundant love toward us to provide.

  • Is sovereign (Matt 6:34) - Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8). If He has provided for us in the past, then assuredly, He will provide in the future.

Focus on our Father’s promises

Rather than focusing on the worry, rather than seeking the ways of this world, we ought to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matt 6:33). When our priorities and passions are in Christ, His promises will come to pass in His timing.

 Heavenly Father,

Thank you that you are a caring Father who loves His children. Lord, forgive us when our worry causes us to weaken our faith in you. Give us the strength to redirect our focus and faith in who you are and your promises. Help us to believe that you will always provide for our daily need through Jesus Christ, according to your will.

In Jesus’ mighty name I pray,

Amen
