Is Jesus the Only Way?

Some of us may have heard about the ancient proverb “all roads lead to Rome.” In today’s world, this can be interpreted to mean that different methods and ways will eventually lead to the same result.

Some people may apply this same principle when it comes to getting to heaven. Many believe that the way to our heavenly father and eternal life is based on religion. Others may believe that it is based on doing good works. However, as we have learnt this week, Jesus mentions that unlike the wide road that leads to destruction, the way to heaven is narrow and only a few will find it (Matthew 7:13-14).

In John 14:6, Jesus says ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’

I am the way

It is important to note that Jesus doesn’t say that he will merely show the way to the Father. Nor does he say that he will merely open the way to the Father. Instead he says that he IS the way to the Father. He alone is our saviour and he alone is our way to heaven. Good works or religion will not get us there. Without Jesus, there is no way to heaven.

1 Timothy 2:5 further tells us that there is one God and one Mediator between God and men. That is Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins to become the way to the Father.

I am the Truth

Knowing the truth about Jesus will change our life forever. In John 8:32 Jesus says that the truth will set us free.

In Jesus, there is absolute truth. He is the source of truth and is the perfect standard of what is right. The world believes that there is no absolute truth because absolute truth requires a person to be confronted with Jesus (the absolute truth). To be confronted with Jesus means to be confronted with sin. And to be confronted with sin may be too offensive or too demoralising to consider.

But for us is who know the truth, Jesus frees us from our slavery to sin and shows us the way to eternal life with the Father.

I am the Life

In John 10:10, Jesus says ‘I have come that they may have life and have it to the full’. Jesus is the source of life. The life that he gives is abundantly richer and fuller than we could ever imagine. Importantly, it is also eternal and we are assured of this in John 3:16, which says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave is one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

Have you taken Christ’s offer of life?

Dear God

We thank you that you are the way, the truth and the life. We thank you for your almighty plan for us to be reunited with the Father and to have an abundant and eternal life; one that is better than we can ever imagine. Help us to live in this truth that you have laid out for us, and that we may in turn show others the way to the Father.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen
