Why Am I Here?

Does life have meaning and purpose? This is one of life’s most asked question among believers and non believers since the beginning of time. We explore this question during our Sunday sermon and we gain a few revelations from Psalms 57:

  1. The Philosophy We Must Adopt (v.5 and 11)

David declares a way of life that we need to adopt also and that is to see God’s glory over all the earth. It’s understanding that we were made to carry out God’s purpose in our lives not our own. This reveals that our place on this earth is not something that happens by chance but rather we have been designed by the Creator himself. The more that we look to God and draw closer in relationship with the three persons of God, the will of God will be revealed to us and will help us to make sense of our life and our function as his creation. With this in mind, it’s important for us to actually understand what God’s glory is. God’s glory can be defined as the infinite beauty and greatness of his perfections manifested. In other words, it’s knowing that the ultimate centre of all the things that happen on Earth is for God’s glory. Meaning that all the things that we do, whether we are sitting or eating should be done for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). We have been created to display his glory and this makes sense because we have been created in his image. This does not mean that God needs us for his Glory because there is nothing that we can do to add or take away from His glory as we are only evidence of what his glory brings. We are on display so people can see God and praise it.

  2. The Purpose of Your Life (v.2)

When we understand that all the things that we do on this earth is to point to God’s glory, it will allow us to look to God in all things. It means that we trust God with our lives and the things that come out of that trust in life points to God’s glory because we are not pointing the glory to ourselves. David shows us that by crying out to God with everything, our purpose will be fulfilled by His glory. It also means that we don’t chase after things that have no meaning or purpose because we are chasing after or crying out to the ultimate purpose. It’s a purpose that has no expiration date. We were made for eternity so we should focus our attention and affections on the eternal things which is God (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

  3. The Path We Must Avoid (v. 6)

In life we are presented with many paths and a lot of these paths can actually take us off our purpose if we are not careful. There are things that can haze our vision and those things are fear (people or future), when we point to our own glory and materialism. David is paving the way in how we should see things in life and knowing which ones to get away from. He makes it clear that God is a lot bigger than these things or even problems that we encounter in life. The way we can avoid these things that take us off our purpose is to fix our gaze on Jesus and knowing that he is a lot bigger and more trustworthy than all these things combined.

  4. The Plan We Must Have

We give glory to God when we come to Christ. Jesus is again God’s glory on display and is what allows us to experience God on a personal and deeper level. Philippians 2:9-11 paints a picture of what it will look like for all who confess Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. This passage magnifies God being glorified. When we love other believers, we are showing God’s glory because we are only reflecting one of God’s characteristics which is love (1 John 4:8). We must adopt the plan to bring glory to God and this can be done with all our actions as we aim to bring God’s glory in all things.

Father God,

Thank you for creating us as a display of Your glory. I pray that we can take time to see your glory all around us in nature and the people you have placed around us. I pray that we trust you with our lives and that we can point the glory back to you instead of ourselves.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
